Is hiring a team member the best first step?
If you’re reading this article, it means that you’ve probably thought about hiring an assistant to help with all the work on your plate. Although having someone else take care of all the admin tasks is tempting, here are some reasons why it’s a bad idea and what you should do instead.
You are finding yourself drowning in admin:
- Responding to inquiries.
- Booking calls
- Sending proposals
- Reconciling and sending invoices
It all seems overwhelming and your first thought is “It’s time to hire a VA”. But wait…that might not be the first step you should take.
These are things that can and should be automated and investing in a CRM might make more sense than adding a team member.
Don’t get me wrong, having a member on your team IS a good idea (it’s how I first started out in my business), but a lot of business owners overlook the power of a Client Relationship Management tool.
Let’s look at this a little more closely.
If you hire a VA for 5 hours a week, you are looking at investing between $8000 to $10,000 per year, depending on the tasks that you are assigning them. If you hire a Dubsado expert to get your admin running on auto, you are looking at a one-time cost of anywhere from $2000-$5000.
If you are setting up your CRM first, you are saving some money PRIOR to hiring out, and when you eventually get to the place where you are ready to invest in outsourcing, your team member is going to have a much easier go at it because you have that system in place and optimized ready to go!
Using a CRM will give you more time to focus on growing your business and generating new leads, rather than spending all of your time responding to the same ones. It’s true that part of building rapport is taking some extra time with people who are reaching out for help or guidance but I promise, if you take some proactive steps in advance, you will find yourself with much more time to spend on things like building your email list, creating lead magnets and doing the other stuff that actually brings in new business.
When it comes down to it, hiring an assistant is a big expense (and if they aren’t bringing enough value for their cost) then your first instinct should be to switch over to a system that is going to do the work for you!
