Research and Planning

Know Your Audience

Before you start writing, it’s important to know who you’re talking to. Understanding your audience helps you create content that connects with them.

People are looking for solutions to their problems and content that speaks directly to their needs.  By writing about what they care about and offering solutions to their challenges, you create a deep connection and provide real value.

This is a win-win situation. It not only establishes you as the expert who has the answers but also creates curiosity in your readers, who may now stick around your website and check out what else you have to offer.

Keyword Research

Keywords are the terms your audience uses to find content like yours when looking for the answers.  That’s why choosing the right keywords is crucial to your blog’s visibility.

When you have relevant keywords, you help your audience find your content easily, ensure it reaches the right people, and get your information ranking well on search engines.

To find the best keywords, start by using tools like Google Keyword Planner or Answer the Public to find popular search terms. Make sure that the keywords you choose are relevant to both your content and your audience.

A good question to ask yourself is, “If I was looking for my services, what would I put into the Google search bar?”  This is a good way to start your search.

You want to make sure that your keywords are being searched and that they don’t have too high of a competition.  If you are a relatively new site, competing for a keyword with a site that has high authority might make it more difficult to rank.

Writing and Structuring

Craft a Compelling Title

Your title is the first thing people see, so make it count. It needs to be catchy and informative to draw readers in and let them know they are in the right place.

Use power words and emotional triggers to make your title stand out. These can evoke curiosity, urgency, or excitement.  Some examples of power words are: New, Proven, Secret, State-of-the-Art, Ground-Breaking, Limited, Exclusive, Final, Luxury, Award-Winning, Authentic, and Certified.

Remember, a great title sets the stage for the entire post. So this is your first chance to grab attention and make a strong impression.

Write a Strong Introduction

Your introduction should hook your readers right from the start. Begin with something engaging that piques their interest.

Clearly state what they will learn from your post. This helps them understand the value of reading further.

A strong introduction not only grabs attention but also sets clear expectations for the rest of the content.

Organize with Headings and Subheadings

You want to make sure that your blog post is well-structured and easy to follow.  This will help with readability and user experience.

Surprisingly, these 2 things can help your blog post rank in search results.

Organizing your content with headings and subheadings makes it easier to read.

You want to guide your readers through your post but also make it easy for them to skip to what they want to see.  One of the ways you can do this is with H2 and H3 headings.

Use short paragraphs and plenty of white space. This makes your content more inviting for your readers.

Think about your readers’ experience. Organized content helps them find what they need quickly and keeps them engaged longer – keeping them on your page longer and improving your bounce rate.

Editing and Proofreading

Check for Grammar and Spelling Errors

Mistakes can make your content look unprofessional and undermine your credibility, so you need to catch any grammar or spelling mistakes before you hit publish.

Tools like Grammarly or Hemingway Editor can help you quickly spot and fix errors. These tools highlight mistakes and suggest corrections, making the editing process easier.

Another effective method is to read your post aloud. This helps you catch awkward phrasing and errors that you might miss when reading silently.  Pro Tip:  Use a tool like Natural Reader to read your post for you.

Ensure Clarity and Conciseness

Long, complicated sentences can be hard to follow and may cause readers to lose interest, so make sure your writing is clear and concise.

Start by removing unnecessary words. Every word in your post should add value. If it doesn’t, cut it out.

Simplify complex sentences. If a sentence is difficult to understand, break it into shorter sentences or rephrase it for clarity. Your goal is to make your content easy to read and understand.

Maintain a Consistent Tone and Style

Consistency in tone and style is important for creating a cohesive blog post. Your voice should reflect your brand’s unique style, so if that is personable and conversational or professional and knowledgeable, make sure that comes through in your words.

Stick to your brand’s style guide. This ensures that your content aligns with your brand’s identity and maintains a consistent tone across all your posts.

When your tone and style are consistent, your readers will feel more connected to your content and your brand. This builds trust and encourages them to return for more.

SEO Optimization

Optimize Meta Descriptions

Meta descriptions are brief summaries of your blog post that appear in search engine results. They play a role in attracting readers to click on your post.

Include primary keywords in your meta description. This will help search engines understand the content of your post and improve your ranking.

Keep it under 160 characters. A concise and informative meta-description means that the full text is displayed in search results, providing a clear snapshot of your content.

Use Internal and External Links

Using links within your blog post helps provide additional value to your readers and improves your SEO.

Link to relevant content on your site. Internal links guide readers to other useful content you’ve created, keeping them engaged and exploring your site longer.

Cite authoritative sources when needed. External links to reputable sites add credibility to your content and provide your readers with additional resources.

A best practice is to always check the box to have the link open in a new window.  You want to be helpful, but you also want readers to stay on your site, and opening the additional resources in another window keeps your blog available.

Optimize Images

Images can enhance your blog post and make it more engaging, but they need to be optimized for SEO as well.

Use descriptive filenames for your images. Instead of generic names like “image1.jpg,” use filenames that describe the content of the image, such as “content-marketing-tips.jpg.”

Add alt text with keywords. Alt text provides a description of the image for search engines and improves accessibility for visually impaired readers. Including keywords in your alt text can also help with SEO.

Please keep in mind that alt text is to help visually impaired readers have access to your blog so don’t use descriptions that don’t make sense just to get more keywords in your content.

By optimizing your images, you make your blog post more accessible and improve its visibility in search engine results.

Final Preparations

Add a Call to Action (CTA)

A strong call to action (CTA) is essential for guiding your readers on what to do next. It encourages them to take the next step, whether it’s signing up for your newsletter, downloading a resource, or contacting you for more information.

Be clear and specific with your CTA. Tell your readers exactly what you want them to do and why it’s beneficial for them. A compelling CTA can significantly increase engagement and conversions.

Schedule and Promote

Publishing your blog post at the right time can impact its reach and engagement. Choose the best time to publish based on when your audience is most active.

Plan your promotion strategy ahead of time. Share your post on social media, and schedule posts to go live at optimal times. Don’t forget to promote it through email newsletters to reach your existing audience.

Remember, repurpose each blog post you write into other forms of content. In my Content Remix and Content Remix VIP packages, I create four additional social media posts, an Instagram Story blog promo post, a newsletter, and a video script that you can share with your audience.
